Incident
On 12 September, around 09:40, Lieutenant Trần Văn Tùng (born 1987, age 39), commander of the 3rd Company, 568th Infantry Regiment of the Hưng Yên Provincial Military Command, was riding his motorbike back to his unit when he reached Bridge Bo, which spans the Trà Lý River at the boundary of Trà Lý ward, Hưng Yên, and Thái Bình ward. Together with civilian Đoàn Văn Tiến, he noticed a 30‑year‑old resident of Đông Hưng commune, identified only as L, struggling with his mother, N., who reported that her son intended to jump from the bridge. The lieutenant and Tiến intervened, persuading L to abandon the suicidal plan and asking Tùng to escort him home. Approximately five minutes later, at 09:45, while Tùng fetched his motorbike, L suddenly threw himself into the river. Tùng immediately stripped his uniform and equipment and leapt after him. Strong currents quickly swept both men downstream, and they vanished from sight.
Search Operation
At 10:15, the 568th Infantry Regiment received a civilian report about a soldier involved in a water‑rescue at Bridge Bo and dispatched personnel to the scene to coordinate the search and gather information. The Trà Lý ward People's Committee announced that local authorities, functional forces, and residents are jointly conducting a search for the two missing individuals along the riverbank and downstream of the bridge. The operation involves the provincial military command, the 568th Regiment, and the Water Rescue Team 116 of Thái Bình which has deployed boats and personnel to locate the bodies. As of now, the whereabouts of Lieutenant Tùng and the young man remain unknown, and the search continues under coordinated civil‑military effort.
