Jonathan Hanh Nguyen, 76, chairman of the Liên Thái Bịnh Dương Group (IPPG), donated 10 billion Vietnamese dong (approximately US$425,000) to a charitable program titled “Nghĩa tình phương Nam – Cùng con đi tiếp cuộc đời.” The event, broadcast by VTV and covered by Báo Thanh Niên, gathered philanthropists, artists, and community leaders to raise funds for children orphaned or left vulnerable by the Covid‑19 pandemic.
Nguyen explained that the contribution was drawn from his pension salary, with the backing of his wife and children. He recounted his personal ordeal during the pandemic when he arranged a chartered flight to bring his daughter from the United Kingdom to Vietnam for treatment, an experience that deepened his empathy for families who lost parents to the virus.
Beyond the monetary gift, Nguyen appealed to Vietnamese donors at home and abroad, emphasizing that modest amounts—ranging from a few hundred thousand to several million dong—could collectively make a significant impact. He highlighted ongoing support activities, from visits to Children’s Hospital No. 2 to orphanage outreach, underscoring a lifelong commitment to social welfare despite his advancing age and health challenges.
The donation aims to fund education, healthcare, and daily living expenses for the affected children, helping them rebuild their futures. Nguyen’s call to action resonated with the diaspora community, reinforcing a broader message of mutual assistance and responsibility toward Vietnam’s most vulnerable populations.
