On the morning of 11 September, dozens of employees at Scavi Huế, a textile company located in the Phong Điền industrial zone of Hue city, suddenly experienced fever, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and watery diarrhoea. The symptoms were quickly identified as a probable food‑borne illness. By 10:00 a.m. the company coordinated with local authorities to transport the affected workers to the Central Hospital of Hue, Facility 2. At 14:45 the hospital reported that 42 employees had been admitted, with 30 in the emergency department, 10 in the tropical disease ward, and two in intensive care. The number of patients rose to more than 50 by late afternoon.
The situation escalated over the next day. By the night of 12 September, a total of 184 workers—most presenting acute gastritis and enteritis—had been admitted to the Central Hospital and the Phong Điền health centre. Samples of food, drinking water and the surrounding environment were collected for laboratory analysis.
In response, the Hue Department of Health issued a formal directive on 13 September, signed by Director Trần Kiêm Hảo, ordering the immediate suspension of the food‑service operations of Công ty TNHH MTV Huế Thành, the catering provider for Scavi Huế’s collective kitchen. The department also instructed the Phong Điền ward People's Committee to monitor compliance and urged Scavi Huế to arrange alternative, food‑safe meals for its staff.
Investigations continue as health officials work to determine the contamination source and prevent further incidents. The affected workers remain under medical observation while authorities await test results.
