Less than two weeks after the initial rail shipments docked, construction crews have already placed almost one kilometre of double‑track railway on Phú Quốc’s urban light‑rail line. The project uses standard gauge 1,435 mm rails, each 25 m long and weighing about 1.5 tonnes; a total of 2,850 rails—over 4,200 tonnes of steel—will form a 17.6‑km double‑track corridor linking Phú Quốc International Airport with the APEC 2027 conference centre. 60R2 profile rails, chosen for their high load capacity and ability to blend with urban scenery, will later be levelled and, where suitable, covered with grass to soften the visual impact. Designed to minimise vibration and noise, the line aims to cut travel time between the airport and the southern island to roughly 20 minutes.
Construction began in December 2025 under a BOT model with a total investment of nearly VND 9,000 billion, 70% funded by the state. The rail‑laying contract, led by Nguyễn Tất Đạt, mobilised around 200 engineers and workers who have continued work even during the September 2‑9 National Day holiday. Veteran rail worker Lê Quý Công, with 36 years of experience, highlighted the rigorous training provided before installation. The contractor expects rail placement to finish by February 2027, allowing trial runs in July and commercial service from November 2027, aligning with the APEC summit schedule.
