The People’s Committee of Cần Thơ is seeking public feedback on a draft master plan that looks to 2050, with a vision extending to 2075. A key revision announced at a September 15 hearing was the removal of Ngã Bảy and the western ring‑road extension from the shortlist of sites for moving the city’s administrative centre. Only two locations remain: a site north of the western ring road, which borders vacant agricultural land but includes extensive fruit‑orchard areas and dense riverside settlements; and the Tây Đô Cultural Center area beside the Cần Thơ River, adjacent to National Road 91B, Quang Trung Street and offering vacant land in the city’s core. Both options are deemed closer to the urban core, facilitating construction and public services, according to Ms. Phạm Thị Huệ Linh of the National Institute of Rural and Urban Planning.
In parallel, architect and Can Tho University lecturer Châu Minh Khải criticised the parallel proposal to build a new airport in Trần Đề or other sites.
He noted that the existing Cần Thơ International Airport handled only 1.1 million passengers in 2025—just 37 % of its 3 million‑passenger design capacity—and lacks regular international routes. Official aviation forecasts project 7 million passengers by 2030 and 12 million by 2050, while consultants claim 18‑20 million by 2050 without substantiating market demand, route networks, financing or investment phasing. Khải urged prioritising the upgrade of the current airport and warned that new‑site options face high construction costs, sea‑level rise, flood risk and air‑space conflicts. He called for independent demand studies, feasible financing, full environmental assessments and inclusion in the national airport master plan before any new airport is pursued.
