Ministry of Home Affairs has submitted to the Government a schedule for the 2027 Lunar New Year (Tết Nguyên đán) holiday. The proposal was announced by Nguyen Thi Quyen, Deputy Head of the Labor Department, at a press conference on 11 September. Under the plan, civil servants and public‑sector employees will receive the statutory five‑day holiday—two days before the New Year and two days after—combined with two weekend days that fall within the period, resulting in a continuous seven‑day break from Thursday 4 February 2027 (the 28th day of the 12th lunar month, Binh Ngo) to Wednesday 10 February 2027 (the 5th day of the 1st lunar month, Dinh Mui). Work will resume on 11 February.
For employees in the private sector, the Ministry offers two alternative arrangements, each totaling five days off: Option 1 grants one day at the end of the lunar year and four days at the beginning of the new year; Option 2 provides two days at year‑end and three days at the start of the new year. Companies may select the option that best fits their operational needs.
The schedule was developed based on existing regulations and feedback from ministries and agencies, aiming to give workers who live far from their hometowns sufficient time to travel and prepare for the celebrations. Earlier in August, the Ministry had also consulted on a ten‑day holiday proposal, which was not adopted.
In addition, the Ministry suggested a four‑day National Day break in 2027, from Thursday 2 September to Sunday 5 September, combining the official two‑day holiday with the weekend. Vietnam currently observes 12 paid public holidays, including the Gregorian New Year, five days for the Lunar New Year, Hung Kings' Festival, 30 April, International Labour Day, two National Day holidays, and Vietnam Culture Day.
